Boston Bruins Return to Stowe
Team wraps training camp with three days of team-building in VT
As the leaves on Mount Mansfield and the surrounding area reach their peak of color this fall foliage season, the Boston Bruins NHL hockey franchise retreated in Vermont once again to conclude their annual training camp. After a full schedule of pre-season play, the final roster of players gathered for three days of bonding (Sept. 29 to Oct. 1) in the beautiful and inspiring environments of Stowe. The team-building event scheduled includes golf, a ropes course, social events, autograph signing at Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory and ice-time at a rink in Waterbury.
The team-bonding ropes course that the Bruins players took part in included incredible balancing acts on suspended ropes and logs high above the ground, all with necessary support from teammates. The exercise revealed a quiet enthusiasm towards adventure for most, the leadership skills of many, the risk-taking personalities of some, and the cerebral elements of others. While there were plenty of light-hearted one-liners and pokes, everyone participated and took on different roles as necessary, which makes you appreciate the teacher in head coach Claude Julien.
"We got really good feedback from the players last year," said coach Claude Julien. "They thought it was good. We felt it was very good. You can credit some of it to the start the team had on the ice. But I think as far as building team chemistry and players getting along, I think when you look at the long run from last year, team chemistry was extremely good. If you can start on the right foot, it just builds from there. I think giving ourselves an opportunity to do those things is very important."
Stowe is an amazing place to visit and live, boasting one of the countries top woman’s hockey academies and arguably the best skiing and snowboarding east of the Rocky Mountains. North-Central Vermont can also brag about several other terrific hockey programs. In particular, the University of Vermont plays in one of the most famous rinks in all of college hockey -- the Gut -- or Gutterson Field House, and counts Stanley Cup Champion's John LeClair, Eric Perrin and Martin St. Louis as alumni. The Bruins own Tim Thomas also attended UVM.
